Fiber, or Fiber Optic Cable as it is sometimes called, is made of thin flexible fibers of glass or other transparent solids to transmit light signals. It works much like a hallway lined with mirrors. The telecommunications signal (light) travels along the strand by reflecting off the mirror-clad walls of the cable. Using this method, information can move farther and faster than on traditional cables.
Fiber has several advantages over traditional cables. It is less expensive than equivalent lengths of copper wire. It is thinner than copper wire, therefore more of them can be bundled together. This allows for higher carrying capacity, meaning more phone lines, data, etc. can move down the line. Additionally, the signal sent down the fiber has less degradation, so it is a better user experience. Also, fiber is ideally suited for carrying digital signals making it significantly better for use in computer networks.
FTTH or FTTP is a method of delivering telecommunications services. In the past, service providers relied on copper or coaxial wire to deliver services from their core network to customers’ homes; and many still do. Spirit Telecom and its 11 member–owners routinely use fiber directly from their core all the way into each individual business and/or home. Frequently, other providers boast about their fiber optic networks, but what they don’t tell you is that while those fiber networks may be in your area, their connections to your business or home are much slower because they are non-fiber. And, since a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, you end up not getting the benefit of fiber-optic speed.
Gigabit internet is 1000 megabits per second (Mbps). Studies have shown that the average residential Internet connection in the United States is less than 10 Mbps, so gigabit internet is 100 times faster than the average U.S. connection. Among other things, gigabit internet enables streaming video from multiple devices, online gaming without any lag, uploading everything to the cloud for backup and transferring large files instantaneously. With gigabit internet, you spend less time waiting and more time enjoying.
Fiber is the technology that powers gigabit internet. To date:
- Spirit and its member companies have over 1,000,000 fiber miles covering 91% of the State of South Carolina.
- To date, 80% of SC counties has access to a business gigabit internet offering and over 60% has access to a residential gigabit Internet offering. Contact your service provider to determine availability in your area.
Spirit Communications and each member-owner have or will have their own individual packages and pricing. You will need to contact your provider to determine availability and price. The goal is for gigabit internet service to be affordable and within a price range that will encourage adoption of the fastest speed available in the country.
Switching to gigabit from the current service allows customers to download videos and online television shows without buffering, stream songs in seconds, connect with friends and family on social media in a blink, and connect more devices to the network without congestion. So basically, it provides a much better user experience.
The member-owners of Spirit Communications are committed to providing the best in telecommunications services regardless of whether a customer upgrades to gigabit or not. You will experience no changes in service. We will continue to maintain our network at the highest possible levels, and provide the best options available to all of our customers.
Your service provider will work with you to ensure that you have the appropriate equipment if you transition to gigabit.
- A strong telecommunications network is a top economic development recruiting tool. Spirit Communications, with its 11 member-owners, has enabled South Carolina leaders to easily promote the state as a Gigabit State. This claim can be made due to a robust fiber network providing gigabit capable connectivity throughout the state to anywhere in the world.
- GigUP South Carolina will help attract industries that demand the highest performance from their internet, and showcase the state as a top choice for businesses and consumers to relocate.
